Grown for the Future
I am now officially retired and would like to undertake some worthwhile projects.
I have always had an interest in gardening, especially growing my own food. I am a member of The Seed Library and Plant Heritage which has brought to my attention how under threat the diversity of cultivated plants has become.
Plants in garden centers are commercially streamlined from a very narrow range, the rest are at risk with some only being grown by one or two nurseries and many are already unavailable.
This website lists the plants I have an interest in and hopefully help to preserve for future growers. If you are interested in preserving your favorite plants do go to the Plant Heritage website for more information.
A plant that is currently out of fashion and has a very bad reputation yet there are some beautiful, well behaved and useful cultivars that would be welcome in any garden.
Generic plants are very commonly available in garden centers but there are so many named cultivars, each one has a different attribute that deserves preserving for the future.
There are a huge range of figs that grow well in the UK and will fruit in a warm spot in the garden but only one variety (brown turkey) is often available in garden centers.
Apricot trees are rarely available at all at garden centers. Not easy to fruit without protection in the UK as the early flowers are susceptible to frosts. This is going to be the ultimate retirement challenge as I will be learning how to graft.
As I propagate my plants I will be making them available for you to preserve in your garden.
